1. Understand how to reflect on practice in adult social care 1.1 Reflective practice is the ability to constantly monitor one’s own performance in a given role and make adjustments where necessary. For me as carer, reflective practice is particularly important because no two cases will ever be the same and it is vitally important to remain reactive and reflective at all times. Reflective practice has been demonstrated to have significant benefits when it comes to the delivery of person centred care, and can help me to ensure that I am able to accurately assess the needs of each resident as an individual rather than as a case number to be merely care for. With reflective practice widely regarded as one of the most important elements of modern care work, it is essential that all care workers become familiar with reflective practice methods. 1.2 Reflective practise is important because it helps me develop and imrpove my practise by thinking about what am I doing. It is about thinking hings over. It can help me to understand feelings and the wider issues involved. By reflecting on events it can allow me to make sense of something that has happened or been said and and possibly see the meaning and reason behind someone else’s actions or words. By reflecting on our own actions we are able to see areas where we could improve, change strategies or actions. It is great tool to aid our learning. This is explained by ,,Kolb’s learning theory’’. David Kolb proposed a 4-stage experiental learning cycle that applies to all learners. He sugested that immediate or concrete experiences provide a basis for observation and reflection. 1.3 It is my responsibility to ensure my knowledge and skills ate up to date. It is important to regulary attend training. Legislations and procedures are constanly changing and it is important to maintain my knowledge and keep it current. The GSCC code of practise states that carers should: – Be accountable for quality of their work and take responsibility for maintaining and improving their knowledge and skills – Undertake relevant  training to maintain and improve their knowledge and skills + contribute to the learning and development of others. – Seek assistance from employer o appropriate authority if there is any doubt about how to proceed in work matter. 1.4 Beliefs systems can be method for understanding, organising and making sense of the world around us. By exploring our own peronal values and beliefs we are able to understand our own individual perspectives of life and world around us. As a care assistant I need to be careful not to impose my own values upon the service user. I can easily fail to recognise service user’s rights to their own standards and beliefs because I held too rigidly to my own beliefs. There may be many differences between my values and standards and service user’s such as: – Having a bath only once a week – Different sexual preferences – Wearing thick, winter clothes in summer – Refusing medication†¦ Im responsible for providing an equal, not discriminatory and inclusive service to all service users no matter what how different are their values from mines. 2. Understand the importance of feedback in improving own practice 2.1 Constructive feedback should include both positive feedback and opportunities for development. Giving both positive and negative feedback enables others to fully understand the impact of what it is they are doing, so that they can continue the effective and correct the ineffective. Feedback is intended to improve an individual’s contribution and develop better staff morale. When feedback is given constructively, people will often respond positively. After all, most people are keen to improve. However, because feedback can be seen as criticism, they sometimes react by: – trying to defend themselves – choosing not to hear what is said – selective reception – doubting the motives of the person giving feedback – denying the validity of the feedback – rationalising why they behaved the way they did – making excuses for their behaviour Because of this, careful consideration needs to be given to how feedback is delivered, making it positive and helpful. 2.2 Feedback is important because: – sets up target and the person knows what to improve on – gets the person motivated and focused – help identify weaknesses and strengths – express and stress what is important to the organisation and the job and hence what the person concerned should prioritise – builds moral and relationship between examiner and worker (depending on how the feedback is given and what sort of work culture there is), in turn, this builds on the credibility of the feedback – induces competition and challenge – a form of motivation – encourages a learning environment, as oppose to a win-lose performance environment – encourages initiatives and ‘risk’/taking chances  confident. I asked her everything I wasn’t sure about and explained to her my feelings. Supervision and feedback is very useful and help me to improve my practise. Informal: should be given to me by my service users, colleagues of family members. It can be just a little comment about my-self, about work I am doing. I always need to be ready to listen. Who can give me better feedback on my work if not my service users? If I’m not sure if I’m doing my job properly, I can always ask my customers. I can prepare a box and tell them to write comments on my work. Then I should read it carefully and apply it in my work. 3. Understand how a personal development plan can contribute to own learning and development 3.1 A personal development plan is a tool that helps one to organise their life activities in terms of certain objectives. It can constitute of personal or professional goals or both e.g. goals on career, relationships, education and health. It is advantageous as one can transform their goals into an achievement. Components may include: – Objectives: What do I want to be able to do or do better? – Actions: What methods will I use to achieve my learning objectives? – Success criteria: How will I recognise success? How will I review and measure my improvement? – Achievement date: When do I expect to achieve my objectives? – Implementation: How will I practise and apply what I learn? 3.2 Everyone should have their own personal development plan. This should be an up to date record showing trainings attended and any training and development needs identified. These needs should have been identified by my-self, my manager or assessor. During my I work I can find out that I need more training in administration of medication, my manger can feel that I need some more training in moving and handling due new equipment need to be used in my workplace. Also my assessor can realise during y supervision that my health and safety training needs to be up dated. This is all kind of support for me in planning and reviewing my development plan. I can also learn from observing more experienced colleagues, working and discussing  issues as a team, reading books/newspaper or searching for support on internet. 3.3 Others may include: – The individual: my service users have the most important role in my personal development because they are the ones I am doing it for. To provide the best care and support for them. Their reactions on my work, satisfaction/ not satisfaction will show me where the gaps are or what my strengths are. – Carers /colleagues: Because my work is mostly teamwork my colleagues play an important role in my personal development plan. Working in team improves my communication skills, common sense†¦ If I find out that I am a role model for one of my colleagues I should know I do my job well. – Supervisor/ line manager: my manger is here to support me with all my needs, doubts and questions. By observing me she can find areas in my work which needs developing so she can provide training for me. – NVQ assessor: comes to observe me and helps me with my work. By observing and working with me she can find gaps in my knowledge and advise me where to find information to develop my skills. 3.4 Benefits of PDP to professional life – Clearer ideas about the kind of life and work I want. – Greater confidence in the choices I make. – Greater confidence in the skills, qualities and attributes I bring to the career of my choice. – Being in a better position to compete for jobs. – Being better able to discuss my skills, personal qualities and competences with employers. – Better problem-solving and planning skills. – Developing the positive attitudes and approaches associated with successful professional life. Many employers now expect employees to understand their own performance – and to know how to adapt to meet times of increased workload, stressful situations or conditions of change. Employees are expected to respond well to change. Whilst some employers offer training, it is more typical for employers to expect graduates to arrive ready to manage both their own performance and the performance of other people. Time devoted to understanding what influences your own performance can be very well spent. It is also important to be aware of how your behaviour affects other people. Employees are often expected to show personal commitment to their continuous professional development (CPD), actively seeking out information, training and events that will keep their skills and knowledge up-to-date. Knowing how to learn, and how you learn best, will be invaluable in the work place. A commander gives his orders in a manner that ensures that his subordinates understand his intentions, their own missions and the context of those missions. b. Subordinates are told what effect they are to achieve and the reason why it needs to be achieved. c. Subordinates are allocated the appropriate resources to carry out their missions. d. A commander uses a minimum of control measures so as not to limit unnecessarily the freedom of action of his subordinates. e. Subordinates then decide within their delegated freedom of action how best to achieve their missions. These principles can be translated into a four steps system to be used by organisations: A ) The leader promotes understanding of the tasks, the level of importance, a framework of action, as subordinates feel involved at the same time as understanding expectations of their superiors. B ) Subordinates know what they are expected to achieve by understanding reasons of the task and the outcome needed, they will be in line with their objective. C ) Individuals will be provide with the assets they need in order to perform their task effectively. D) Once the task is been understood, subordinates know what to achieve and the resources to do so the manager can take a passive position, providing guidance when it is needed. E) Employees will have the autonomy to decide how to use the resources and when is this appropriate in order to be successful. This will increase their initiative and commitment towards what is required to do. Mission command states by performing these elements organisations will experience fluid communication between managers and subordinates, clear goals, knowing what is require from them, the tools and resources to achieve it. Despite the abounding attention on men’s side Brett rejects to become committed to a single man, at least physically. Neither the affluence of attention nor her independence makes Brett a happy woman. Having first appeared as a careless free woman Brett Ashley turns out to be an unhappy and miserable creature just the same as all those who lived through the war. Brett is often described in the literary criticism as sexually promiscuous, or even a nymphomaniac, which seems extreme given that in the course of the story she has sexual relationships with, at most, three men – her fiancee, Mike Campbell; Robert Cohn; and Pedro Romero. Some critics, like Edmund Wilson, assess Brett’s conduct as â€Å"bitch-like†; Wilson interprets Brett Ashley as â€Å"an exclusively destructive force† (p. 238). This interpretation, plausibly, is directly related rely to Brett’s own assertion that she makes to Jake after she leaves Romero: â€Å"You know it makes one feel rather good deciding not to be a bitch† (Hemingway, 245). Nonetheless it is difficult to agree with such interpretation of Brett’s character. First of all it is known that she is one of the â€Å"lost generation†, the people whose youth fell on the post-war period when the relationships and responsibilities were loose and disordered, and so Brett’s behavior merely reflects this time. Furthermore, though Brett never stayed with any man longer than she wanted, she never displayed cruelty in attitude toward men, so she could not destruct them to any degree. And the most important thing which explains Brett’s character is again related to the time of the novel. Brett Ashley belongs to those people whose thoughts are confused being affected by the war. So while looking for her way in life she fails in finding the lull for her psychological disturbances therefore continues her self-abusive conduct. Brett can be profoundly careless of the feelings of others. She scatters cigarette ashes on Jake’s rugs, and when Romero gives her a bull’s severed ear after a successful bullfight, she leaves the gift behind, stuffed in a hotel drawer. Cohn calls her a sadist when she is unmoved by the plight of the horses gored in the bullring. Certainly she uses Jake heartlessly at times, expecting him to introduce her to a man she desires, put up with her affairs, remain steadfast in his devotion to her, and faithfully run to her rescue on short notice when she finds herself at loose ends in another country. Yet she is also deeply unhappy and emotionally fragile. Viewed more sympathetically, she can be seen as a self-destructive woman, traumatized by the ugly and unromantic loss of her first love to dysentery in the war: â€Å"Brett hurts no one in the novel as severely as she hurts herself. Her nymphomania, her alcoholism, her constant fits of depression, and her obsession with bathing are all symptoms of an individual engaged in a consistent pattern of self-abuse† (Whitlow, 56). All in her misery she often complains to Jake, her only true friend, about her aimless existence and unsatisfying life. Her vagrancy from relationship to relationship is assimilated with Jake and company roaming around bars. As the novel unfolds one observes how Lady Ashley transforms from the self-confident independent woman into one who seems extremely awkward being by herself. That is why she is searching for the shelter in more or less stable though platonic relations with Jake. As with the other characters, World War I obviously played the determinative role in the formation Brett Ashley’s character. Having lost her true love during the war she elaborated the pattern of random relations, especially with regard to men. Her skepticism and lost faith in search for true love symbolizes the search of the whole lost generation for their decayed values. Unable to find support in the traditional convictions that imposed certain meaning to her life Brett feels morally lost. Having lost belief in anything Brett together with her friends is trying to escape the reality and fill her empty life with careless wandering from bar to bar, living night life, drinking and entertaining, doing everything that fits into the notion escapist activity. The character of Lady Brett Ashley is developing through the novel from the initial impression of careless but happy woman into the typical representative of post-war generation with aimless way in life. We had been home in Illinois about six months and everything that was good began to turn bad. My great life was turning for the worse all before my eyes. My husband was starting to abuse me physically and he had also started cheating on me. Well, he had promised to never do it again and I wanted to believe him, not to mention I wanted to keep my family intact. I was brought up that family was everything, and a family that prays together stays together. My parents had been married 45 yea rs and it was just unheard of where I come from.Time had passed on (7 years to be exact) and things had gotten better for us and we talked about expanding our family some more and that is what we did. I became pregnant in 1997 with our first daughter, Maurice. I named her after her dad. Crazy, I know but I did it with no remorse at all. In the mist of me getting emotionally tied into more of the li es and deceit, I turned in my two week notice.Things seemed to be okay at least I was getting the opportunity to get my degree like I had always wanted to do. Maurice tricked me back into his good graces and all was well between the two of us. About a year later history began to repeat itself. I was going to a junior college in my hometown and I started hearing rumors again about my husband and I was a full time student and full time mother. I had tons of homework to do on top of my normal duties as a wife and mother. I was literally mentally exhausted from the rumors, homework, kids, no good husband and my mother was diagnosed with breast cancer.I had hit rock bottom, I really didn’t think I was going to make it mentally. I was trying to be strong because I didn’t want my children to know that their father was up to his old tricks again, but all along I was the only one in denial. I had later found out that they knew anyway, just because it was a small town. My mother and father were my support system and I didn’t have anyone else I could depend on. Then shortly after my mother was diagnosed with breast cancer, my father took ill and we found out he had cancer as well.I was going crazy, because we were such a close knit family. My father was in the last stages of cancer and he took chemo but it didn’t help. It was too far gone and it spread very fast and in a matter of months we lost my father. I was devastated and my mother was in chemo still and my husband was not there for me. I prayed about my situation and filed for divorce. I didn’t know what I was going to do for money and I had just lost my father also. I felt doomed and so alone. Before the divorce was final my husband made one last attempt to get me back.However, I was done so I refused to even consider taking him back. I had to think about my children and what message I was sending them. Finally, I divorced my husband and I had nowhere to turn. I thought about my children first and my mother second and right then and there I knew if I wanted to keep up with the life style I had been accustomed to then and now, I needed an education. I decided to work full time and go back to school and get my education. I made a promise to my kids, mother and self that I would get my degree in education if that was the last thing that I did.I want to be able to give my children everything that they need and I would like to be able to financially take care of my mother. My mother has been my anchor from day one and she never once complained. The least I can do is please her along with myself and get my degree. I am the baby of four and everyone has their degree except me, and my mother told me that would be gift enough to see her baby graduate from college. Then I knew I had no other choice, so I prayed about my final decision and here I stand. God saw fit for me to continue my education in spite of and he made a way out of no way.I had to hit rock bottom men tally and physically for me to get myself together. It was all worth it in the end, because I have a piece of mind and I am at peace with myself. I heard about Ashford from a friend in another state and I am now a full time student at Ashford University.
